broken spirit (psalm 51:16-17)

psalm 51:16-17
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

God set up the sacrificial system, he told the people to do it, but he will not be pleased with people going through the motions if their heart is not in it

    [8] “‘This people honors me with their lips,
        but their heart is far from me;
    [9] in vain do they worship me,
        teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

(Matthew 15:8-9 ESV)

We need to be broken down before we can be lifted up. Without a devastating recognition of our own sin, we will never be able to fully appreciate the cross and the depths of God's love. Stop going through the religious motions. Consider your own sin. Then consider his great mercy.
