on the attack

The knowledge and understanding that Jesus is the Son of God is not something we work out for ourselves or understand becasue someone explained it to us. It is revealed by God. I need to pray that God will reveal more of himself to me, and that He would reveal Himself to people who don't know Him yet.

"The gates of hell shall not overcome against the church". Gates are a defensive tool, trying to keep something out, not attacking. That means that the church is (or should be) on the attack against hell, not defensive. Its easy to get in a defensive mindset, thinking that I'm under attack and the best I can hope for is Jesus defending me. But actually, I should be on the attack, with Jesus, against the powers of the enemy, taking ground back, reclaiming things that he has stolen. If I'm on Jesus' side then I'm on the winning team.

Peter goes from confessing who Jesus is, to being called Satan in a short space of time. Jesus says that His mind was on the things of men, not the things of God. I want to keep my mind on the things of God and I need Jesus' help for that.
